15-year-old city girl bags gold at international wrestling championship
Lakshmi Irangowda Patil, from the small town of Belagavi’s Kangarli, wrestling was just a hobby. Little did the I PU student realize when she first took to the sport that she would make her city, state and country proud by winning a gold medal at an international championship.Fresh from her win at the Under 16 2016 UWW World Pankration Championship that was held in Russia,Lakshmi
spoke to Belgaum Times about her inspiration and the support she received from all quarters to realize her dream. I began wrestling when I was in Class 7.Initially,I just picked it up out of interest and had no aim as such of winning, or even participating in any championships. But as I got better,I began taking part in tournaments. My first big tournament was the state-level championship in Hassan. I secured second place there and have since gone on to participate at nationals five times.
