Convicted inmates at Hindalga jail aspire to study further
It’s truly said that education has no bar. This can found at Belagavi’s Hindalga Jail. A few of 18 convicted inmates, motivated by the prison department have up different streams of their choice to pursue further studies in spite of all odds. Since this will help to live a better life after they are released. Pursuing education in jail also help inmates to come out of trauma and forget bitter memories of past by engaging in to syllabus, a said by assistant superintendent of jail B V Mulimani
These people have opted for admission to different degree and PG course under Karnataka Open University. Shashikant Yadagude, teacher in school said that as many as 14 of them are pursuing Bachelor in arts (B.A), one among them is pursuing Bachelor in Commerce (B.Com), two of them are pursuing Master Course in Journalism (MCJ) and while one of them is pursuing Master in Arts (Economics). He also added that previously there were few inmates who had cleared courses like LLB and MBA. The upcoming examination for these aspiring students is arranged at Maratha Mandal College.
It should be noted that the entire course fee and other education expenses are borne by the Prison department. However this facility is available for convicted prisoners and not for prisoners who are on trial basis. Prisoners who are on trial basis have to borne such fees by themselves if they want to pursue any degree.
The prison department should be admired for not only they motivate these prisoners to take up further education but they also maintain the good study atmosphere needed. The prison department has a well maintained library with varied books available for studying to these aspirant prisoners
