Heavy rains leave trail of flooded homes; potholes
Heavy downpour the last couple of days has taken its toll of most of the roads in the city with big potholes surfacing on roads.
Likewise, heavy rains that lashed the city has led to storm water drains, including nallah, being water logged in areas along the nallah routes.
Due to heavy downpour there were reports of water gushing in to house at several low laying areas in belagavi city including at Ujwal Nagar and Shri Nagar. Water logging was also witnessed in areas like Shastri Nagar. Good shed Road and Jakkeri Honda.
Some of the roads which have developed huge potholes include roads laid in the month of April and may exposing the quality of works.
Monsoon season until now had been mostly dry and city has been receiving heavy rains from early hours of Tuesday. It has resulted in many of the roads developing huge potholes and some wide enough to accommodate scooters and motorcycles. Roads which have developed large number of potholes were also repaired in the month of April & May. Some of the road works were also seen in the month of June. Road from Kakatives to the Deputy Commissioner office compound which had been laid prior to the monsoon season too has developed huge number of potholes exposing the quality of the works. Similarly, if the downpour continues on similar scale for next few days areas from Nanawadi on the east side of the City could get clogged with rainwater.
More than 150 encroachments including apartment are standing in the nallah passing from the city from west to east end. With more downpour being expected in the coming days, the pace with which the roads are disintegrating shows that in the coming days most of the roads would be replaced by potholes. Belagavi City Corporation & Public Works Department had laid the bitumen coating on the roads which have begun to damage. Despite flooding of areas during previous year, BCC has failed to clear encroachments standing on the nallahs & take action against violators including developers who have diverted & encroached the nallahs. BCC officials during the previous monsoon had assured to conduct survey of the nallah & clear all the encroachments standing in the nallahs and bufferzone on both the sides of the nallah, but their assurance have remained on paper & people were suffering. Heavy downpour for the past couple of days in the city has led in fear of floods coming true and Goods Shed Road & Shashtri Nagar areas that come along the nallah routes getting flooded & witnessing water clogging. Knee height waters were standing in parts of residential areas in Goods Shed Road and Shashtri Nagar surroundings. Since the early hours of the day, people had to fetch the rain waters out by using buckets and tumblers, but could not succeed fully with more downpours adding to their miseries.
