ROYCETON GOMES MEMORIAL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT- FINALISTS DECLARED
The Finalists, Islamiya High School and Phoenix Public School, emerged today on a very exciting day of football on the grounds of Phoenix School, Nehru Nagar.
The first semi-final at 2:00 PM was played between Islamiya High School and St. Paul’s High School. Crowds turned out in large numbers to watch one of the most anticipated and exciting match of the Tournament. St. Paul’s started well but fumbled on a number of occasions and on one of those occasions, Md Shabbir Khan of Islamiya opened the score of the match by placing a neat powerful shot into the nets in the 16th minute. Just before a few minutes before half time, through a penalty awarded to St. Paul’s, Md Hanzala Pathan managed to equalize the score in the 30th minute. The pace of the game seemed to increase in the second half with both schools displaying excellent football skills. But no goals were scored in the second half. The match went on into extra time. In the first half of extra time both schools did not score any goals. However, in the last few minutes of the second half of extra time, Md Shabbir Khan shot a powerful goal in to the nets in the 73rd minute. With the goal, Islamiya was declared the first finalist to enter the Finals.
The second semi-final at 3:30 PM was played between Bharatesh High School and Phoenix Public School. Bharatesh played an excellent game through most of the first half but had nothing to show on the score board. Meanwhile, while Phoenix had the ball in the opponent’s half, Nivarutti Pavanoji managed to sneak a goal in the 9th minute. The score at half time was 1 – 0. In the second half, Phoenix played a more aggressive game with Basavprakash Kurabeti, Dattesh Gad, Nivarutti Pavanoji, Prashant Patil and Nitin Pujari each scoring goals in the second half. Phoenix won the match 6 – 0 and were declared the second finalist to enter the Finals.
The Finals match of the Memorial Cup 2017 between Islamiya High School and Phoenix Public School will be played on August 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM on the grounds of Phoenix School, Nehru Nagar.
