SEVERE DROUGHT TRIGGERS DISTRESS SELLING OF CATTLE
Due to no water in dams, lakes & tanks, the farmers are facing problems to serve there animals & they believe that it’s a sin to keep cattle unfed,a sin that will lead to curse on the farm, & this belief is driving cattle to the slaughterhouse.
The farmers think that it is better to sell there cattle at the cheaper rates rather than facing their curse keeping them with empty stomachs in their homes. Due to no water in the dams the Sugarcane bill payments have also been delayed.
The main cattle markets are at Mudalagi, Yargatti, Khanapur, Ankali, Bagewadi, Bailhongal & Kittur at increased levels of business & the farmers rush to these markets to sell their cattle & the cattle sold here end up at the slaughter house. The buyers are usually brokers who make 100% profits on the re-sales to slaughterhouses.
There are no farmers buying cattle in the market, brokers are buying them & selling them to slaughterhouses at double rates. Due to unavailability of fodder, farmers are using their Oxen only during sowing & harvesting & then, selling them back again, said Santosh Chougule of Raibag.
