Students letter to demand Belagavi-Karad railway line
After many local politicians and social activists,it could well be the turn of students who will push for the implementation of the ambitious belagavi-karad rail line by writing to railway minister Suresh Prabhu.
Prof Rajan Chikkode, social worker and Ex-Councillor of Nippani city council, has called upon students to put pressure on the centre to implement the railway track via Sankeshwar, Nippani and Ichalakaranaji.
He is visiting government schools and meeting managements of private schools and colleges to get their support in sending letters to the railways. Chikkode said that former railway minister Mamata Banerjee had ordered tender notification for the work. Chikkode informed that he had collected over 35,000 letters from the general public and sent them to the railways when Ram Vilas Paswan was the minister in charge of the department in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. “Bowing to the pressure, Paswan had ordered survey of the lane before the government collapsed.” he told STOI.
In 2012-13, the UPA government conducted a feasibility survey of the proposed track which proved profitable. According to the survey, the distance of the project is 191km in which 94.6km is in Maharashtra. The project will cover a distance of 97.3km in Karnataka. Ichalakaranji. Railway Kruti Samiti, headed by president of Ichalakaranji municipal council, is struggling for the implementation of the project since the past six years.
